“Cat is out of the bag” the cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Imran Khan held on 23rd, June,2020 turned into heated arguments between the participants, Prime Minister had to intervene to cool down the temperature and keep things in order. This episode took place after an interview given by Fawad Chaudry, a cabinet member to Suhail Warraich a renewed journalist and anchor. During the interview he pointed out the major reasons why PTI failed to implement her vision of good governance, Health and education sector reforms, Economic reforms, and accountability and justice. One of the major reasons he pointed out was disharmony and grudges between dominant office holders of party (PTI), He accused Jahangir Tareen as mastermind of fabricating conspiracy against then Finance Minister Assad Umar that resulted in his removal from the officeof Finance Ministry. No wonder Assad Umar is one of most trusted and loyal companion of Prime Minister and remained steadfast in every thick and thin. Assad Umar enjoys a sound repute in corporate sector and was declared as most successful CEO in the country. In a major reshuffle Prime Minister again induct him in his cabinet, he was assigned the portfolio of Ministry of Planning and Development. Fawad Chaudry blamed Assad Umar for staging the plot against Jahangir Tareen during recent sugar crisis in the country, an independent Sugar commission was constituted which accused Jahangir Tareen and others responsible. Faisal Vawda raised concerns over the poor performance of government.
After 2018 general elections PTI emerged as one of the largest political party in the country, public had shown massive and unprecedent support for PTI, conventional politicians and politics were ousted. PTI formed coalition governments in Center, Punjab, Baluchistan and KPK, Imran Khan’s 22 years of struggle born thefruit. He challenged the status quo, discrimination, corruptions, inequality and bad governance in Pakistan. He had been openlycriticizing the policies of past governments. He promised the nation “Naya Pakistan”he will change fate of Pakistan; his government and leadership will take Pakistan to zenith. Welfare state, bringing back the looted money, Pakistan will not seek IMF or world’s bank financial assistance, Corrupt politicians and civil servants will face indiscriminate accountability, Fast Track Judicial System, Police reforms, Local Government reforms, five million houses, Integration of Baluchistan in national stream was the agenda of PTI.
Its been two years since PTI is ruling the country, government took U-turn when all efforts of seeking bailout package from brotherly Muslim countries went in vain despite PM paid visits to China, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Qatar and UAE, financial emergency was declared and country was about to default, government decided to seek IMF and world bank financial assistance program. Budget 2019-2020 was an unpopular budget among general public and corporate sector. Government had increased income tax rate to maximum 35% from 25%, removal of zero-rating facility to five export-oriented sectors (which includes textiles sector)despite strong opposition by from industry. Exchange rates, Interest rates and Inflation were highest ever in the economic history of Pakistan.Along with the poor performance on economic front government has failed in making new legislations, under PTI government PSDP spending remained very low.No reforms have been introduced in civil service and Police departments so far, local government elections are yet not conducted despite promises of introduction of new local government system.
Recently BNP (Mengal) announced withdrawal from PTI coalition government, claiming that government did not accord the agreement made between MNP-(Mengal) and PTI and he does not foresee his return in the coalition, he added we will remain in the assembly and keep on raising the issues of Baluchistan. PMLQ and MQM wereirked with the government for not honoring the written agreements between them. Imran Khan during an interview told that he will prefer to sit in opposition rather than forming coalition government. PM Imran khan during an interview criticized then government for a large sized cabinet and told the interviewer (Mr. Hamid Mir) that my cabinet will comprise of 15 to 18 persons, vice versa PM has 50 cabinet members 27 federal minister, 4 state ministers, 5 advisors and 14 special assistants which is contrary to his ideology and commitment.
The synopsis of PTIs two years of rule, they were not prepared to tackle the challenges faced by country, life became hard on common man, Unemployment rate surged, economic growth stalled, government showed inability in taking timely decisions, PM Imran Khan failed in building a goal driven team. People are forced to believe that tenures of PMLN and PPP were much better compared to present government.Elected cabinet members are blaming advisors and special assistants for the non-performance where as prime minister has given ultimatum of six months to his cabinet to get their houses in order otherwise things can slip out of the hand.
