The levering up of dismantled Modern Turkey to the glorious heights, which it was on after the conquest of Constantinople through the string of religion, is what Tayip Erdogan has envisioned but for long has been put on hold due to a treaty called the Treaty of Lausanne 1923, which has turkey hand tied, losing a lot of its powers and land. The Treaty will come to an end in 2023 after completing hundred years, the year Erdogan is devising and having its horses on hold for.
He on Friday, announced that the world famous Hagia Sophia musem in Istanbul, originally founded as a cathedral is being reconverted to a mosque after a court annulled the site’s museum status.
The original found status- Orthodox Cristian Cathedral Hagia Sophia was found in 1500s was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman’s Constantinople conquest in 1453.
In 1934 it became a museum and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The religious fanatics in Turkey, has been giving a call for its reconversion to a mosque for a long time but the secular opposition in the state had always resisted and opposed the behest. The proffer has engendered criticism from religious and political leaders from all around the world.
In rebutting the decision, Erdogan emphasized that the country has practiced its potentate right in converting it back to a mosque. The cathedral turned museum by Atta Turk, Erdogan’s on a step closer to dismantling Ataturk’s Secular Legacy, was seen having no regrets in making of this decision but is rather satisfied despite of all the global condemnation. He told a press conference the first Muslim prayers would be held inside the building on 24 July.
But what value does it hold? From a comprehensive viewpoint, Erdogan calling himself a conqueror, paving way for a Turkey that is put on hold by a hundred years long Treaty. For a turkey, that will be more Muslim than secular. Needing turkey’s people who doesn’t share a unified ideology yet but in order for them to unite, religion needs to be the acme, to regain the status that Turkey and its people upheld in Muslim world before World War l.
It is not just one simple monument that will be turned to a mosque but this decision is the depiction of a lot more things, for Turkey as a sate and to the world. From Erdogan’s’ eminent yet controversial series Ertugrul to turkey having its claws being pierced deeper on its own land as well as the world politics, the course is being coherently crystallined.
On one side, secular Turkish people together with many voices globally has been criticizing the decision of conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, having their pride taken away for being a secular Muslim state, they exclaiming. On the other, an organized slant is effectuated and is being indoctrinated which actually is to demolish the secular Turkish image and turn it to a frontline Muslim leadership. The minds disquieted at pluralism and world heritage being threatened by the decision are right for the decision is actually a message across for the Empire’s rising. But at what cost and how? The boost in Erdogan’s popularity, if looked at through the same perspective of opposition, will be small and insignificant but the result this decision will put into Erdogan’s campaigning and mapping of a hundred-year-old plan, will be monumental and will escalate at a larger and lucid scale.
Pakistan, Turkey’s brotherhood alsowas on its way to the construction of a Hindu temple in capital Islamabad, which on courts order now has been put on hold partitioned it to be against states ideology. The ruling that is being considered primitive and resulted in people protesting for the rights of minorities and their endangered lives in a Muslim Republic State.
Christians around the globe who looked at Hagia Sophia as a symbol of peace and light disheartened, now see the Turkey that was ox-bowed in world war one and lost, but secured it’s shattered, scattered Ottoman dignity by signing a 100 yearlong treaty which was the losing of its land, minor financial burdens and restrictions on Tariff, with having no war reparation. The Muslim rulings that won Constantinople and built Empires, were toppled, Turkish people were secularized and the Muslim leadership effaced. But Erdogan’s every decision point in a direction that will have the world be impatiently waiting for 2023, seeing the Treaty of Lausanne being demolished and watch Erdogan’s Turkey finally have a face.
